The Differences between Mineral and Chemical Sunscreens

Chemical Sunscreens

Ingredients: chemicals (i.e. oxybenzone, oxtinoxate) that convert UV rays to heat

  • May be irritating in sensitive skin

  • Can worsen melasma (due to heat in chemical reaction)

  • No white film on the skin

  • Takes 20-30 min to work

Mineral Sunscreens

Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, which physically block UV rays

  • Less irritating in sensitive skin

  • Protection starts immediately

  • Can aggravate acne prone skin

  • Takes longer to apply
